Clutching a stuffed animal, an eight-year-old girl read a victim impact statement to a hushed courtroom Wednesday, at a sentencing hearing for two men convicted of a deadly street racing crash that killed her parents.

Rob and Lisa Manchester were killed when their car was hit by one of two speeding Hondas.

After celebrating their 17th wedding anniversary last year, Rob and Lisa Manchester were killed when their vehicle was struck by one of two speeding cars, reportedly travelling 150 km/h.

"I am mad at the men who killed my parents," Katie said.

Rob Manchester was making a left-hand turn from Yonge Street onto Stouffville Road in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto, on May 27, 2006 when a speeding Honda struck his vehicle, killing him and his wife Lisa.

In May, Ruben Rodrigues, of Maple, pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, while 19-year-old Marco Gasparro, of Richmond Hill, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Outside court, Katie told reporters she was sad and misses her parents terribly.

"At the end of the statement I could hardly read it because my eyes were too watery," she said. "I was thinking about them dying."

Lisa's best friend Vickie McKeage said the Manchesters would be proud of Katie's courage and strength.

"And (Katie) wants to talk to the media so badly. She wants to tell the people of Ontario, 'Don't let this happen again, don't let any more children lose their parents to street racing or speeding,'" McKeage told CTV News.

Katie has had trouble moving forward after her devastating loss, but the Grade 2 student says she enjoys living with her aunt and uncle in Aurora.

Sentencing for Rodrigues and Gasparro is expected to take place Oct. 3.

On Wednesday, the Newmarket courtroom also heard that Rob Manchester had nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system when his car was hit.

Police investigators told the court that Rob's alcohol consumption may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

But prosecutor Doug Kasko said the victim should not be blamed.

"Both vehicles were being driven aggressively, accelerating quickly, passing other vehicles, changing lanes quickly, weaving in and out of traffic, causing other vehicles to brake to avoid a collision and travelling at high rates of speed," he said.

Katie's aunt said the girl was never told of the circumstances surrounding her father. In fact, only a few family members knew ahead of the hearing.

"I don't know whether we'll tell her right now -- it's a lot to think about," the aunt, Cathy Gray, told reporters. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things play out and just deal with it day by day."

The Crown is asking for a two-year jail term for Rodrigues and six months for Gasparro. The defence is asking for house arrest.

M'ouais, situation difficile a juger. On a pas assez d'info sur l'accident pour voir si l'ivresse du bonhomme a été un facteur, mais n'empêche que les 2 jeunes conduisaient "dangereusement" (encore là, était-ce vraiment dangereux?).

Rapidement de même, je dirais de dropper les accusations a juste "dangerous driving". Le bonhomme a lui même tué sa femme en prenant le volant saoul. Les 2 jeunes ont causé l'accident en conduisant dangereusement. Je serais curieux de voir quelles accucation il aurait le bonhomme si ce serais lui qui aurait tué 2 personnes!

Il faut juste faire la différence entre la job d'un policier et celle d'un juge.

Ce qui est souvent plate , c'est que même si le policier a bien fait sa job, les juges déclarent des ivrogne non coupable pour des raisons insignifiantes ou donne des sentences vraiment ridicules selon la gravité de l'acte commis.

Donc si le gars est déclaré non coupable ou a une sentence de merde, c'est p-ê pas à la police qui faudrait en vouloir.

Justement pour ça que je dis que c'est difficile a juger: On connais riens de l'accident excepté qu'il tournait a gauche et que les kids "coursaient". Je suis bien d'accord que si c'est de sa faute a lui, qu'on laisse les kids tranquille.
