Corser crowned 2005 World Superbike champion.

SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER 2005

Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki's Troy Corser has wrapped up the 2005 Corona Extra World Superbike title - without even turning a wheel in race two at Imola.

With heavy rain pouring down on the Italian circuit, the race two grid formed and the riders did their sighting lap as usual - but, having experienced the conditions, the riders themselves called a halt to the proceedings before the red lights went out.

They were concerned about visibility and Vermeulen, Corser and Laconi later went out on the track in one of the safety cars to see if conditions were safe to race. It was after this lap that the riders, along with Race Direction, decided to cancel the race.

Corser has a 55-point lead over closest rival Chris Vermeulen, and with race two being cancelled there are only 50-points left, from next weekend's Magny-Cours season finale, therefore Vermeulen can no longer take the title.

"I'll be happy after Magny Cours to show that the result would be the same there," said Corser. "It's a bit hollow at the moment, but someone would have got hurt. Chris gave up the championship to make the right decision, he has a big heart and a lot of racing ahead of him."

"It is a long time since the last title and thanks to all those who kept faith in me," added Troy, who last took the WSBK crown nine-years-ago with Ducati. "A big thank you to my beautiful wife, Samantha for believing in me and giving me two beautiful children."

FGSport's Paulo Flammini said of Corser: "You are another time a World Champion after nine-years and one of our best riders."

Corser's wife Sam was simply speechless.

Avec le début de saison qu'il a connu, j'espère qu'il est champion! Il a gagné quoi? 10 des 11 premières courses avant que Vermeulen ait une Honda capable de rivaliser avec lui?

La meilleure moto, et de très loin, avec l'un des trois ou quatre meilleurs riders dessus... Résultat prévisible.
