Rossi restores order with close Qatar win.
MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi has won his first race since October last year after a tense victory over Nicky Hayden today in Qatar - an achievement that puts him level with Mick Doohan with 54 premier-class wins. Pole sitter Casey Stoner confidently led the early laps before being passed by Rossi at half-distance. Thereafter, Stoner slipped slowly backwards to an eventual fifth while Rossi, Hayden and Loris Capirossi battled to the flag. Rossi re-passed Hayden for the lead with three laps to go and eventually won by 0.9secs, with Capirossi a further 0.5secs back in third. The Doctor is back in business! Valentino Rossi took the win in the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar today, on a hot but windy day at the Losail Circuit. The seven times World Champion came from seventh on the grid to win at the circuit for the first time in his career, taking the lead from pole-man Casey Stoner on lap ten. Nicky Hayden briefly led the race, before Rossi took back the lead and put some distance between the two, nearly a second at the end of the race. Loris Capirossi was once again on the podium, leaving him as the series leader after adding to his win in the opening race of the season. Team-mate Sete Gibernau was fourth, ahead of Casey Stoner. Stoner couldn't quite manage to hold on for a podium place having led for a third of the race. A fierce battle raged behind the young Australian for sixth. Dani Pedrosa and Marco Melandri involved in a back-and-forth tussle from start to finish, ahead of Toni Elias. Colin Edwards and Kenny Roberts Jr. rounded off the top ten, whilst the retirees were Randy de Puniet through a crash and both Suzuki riders John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen through mechanical problems |
