I picked up my new Sv650 yesterday , its my first new bike.
I keep hearing about "rodage" and the manual says to keep the revs under 6000 RPM untill I reach 1000km. Someone even told me no autoroutes untill 1000km. What should I be doing to break it in properly ? |

Thanks guys.
The manual says to stay under 6000 rpm untill 1000km. That seems a little extreme for a bike which has a 11000 rpm redline. |

one of the major reasons why the manual says under 6000 rpm is cause since the motor is new , small metal particals are released into the oil pan and thus the higher the rev, the more likely the damage may be extensive....the japs built those machines so i think the japs know whats best huh?

well fizzer, between u and me, why take the chance? 1000km is a fairly short period to wait considering u will have thousands of km ahead of u to put on the bike if it runs well sooooo that being said , its worth slackin of the throttle a tad before unleasing hell on that machine of urs....u will get there soon enuff to rip that sucker

I broke mine in the mototune way. i Changed the oile at 100km and i will again change it at 2000km. the break in happens in about 50km not 1000km.
If you read the article, it says that your rings wont seat proprely if you leave the engine under 7000rpms. I used this break in on my race engines. (see the pic in my profile) and never had any problems with my engines, all race tuners break engines that way. It makes me laugh a little when i look at what NITRORR said about this (no offence) he said he kept his bike under 7000rpms bla bla bla. I have the same bike he does and my owners manuel said nothing about keeping it under 7. It said avoid fast acceleration for first 500km or something like that. it didnt say anything about rpm's. |

I have and easy method of break in.
first 400 km below 6000. It gives you time to break in the breaks, the clutch, the chain and everything than moves. After that it's 100KM / 1000 rpm so when you get to 1000KM you flush the oil and you`re ready to go. Theory is easy you need to break in the bike then the engine. Avoid long periods at the same RPM. Always climb the end of the RPM range slowly to let the rings settle-in but give it lots of gas at the bottom of the range. It seats the rings perfectly and won't cause extra wear on the rings. You'l get great mileage and performance if you go too easy you get blow-by and loose power witch contaminates the oil and wears the engine down. I done it this way for years and my engines always work great. I sold my 2000 ZX-9R with 50000 KM and the thing dosn't eat a bittle of oil even after 5000KM. Not bad ! |
