Kawasaki Super Single Sportbike Planned

If the rumors we are hearing are correct, Kawasaki may be the first to market with a super lightweight sportbike powered by a modern motocross single-cylinder engine displacing 250cc and/or 450cc. The four-stroke motocross era has fueled the development of high performance, single-cylinder engines that are logical candidates for street bike use. We are already beginning to see these engines utilized in street legal supermotard-style bikes. Sportbikes are next, and Kawasaki may be first.

why a single cylinder? What's the advantage over a two cylinder?

This is the kind of bike that would sell here in Europe, but forget about North America. US and Canadian sporbike riders are horspower junkies. How many people I've seen complaining on this website that a 600cc 100hp bike is not powerful enough?

Personally, I think that a superlight vtwin would be a better idea. For example, Aprilia has developped a very compact twin for mx/supermoto bikes that IMO would suit better such a concept. A stock single is very unlikey to develop more than 50hp
