This is my own opinion and I would like to share this with you. Some of you will agree with it..some will not. This is not in anyway posted to cause any 'flame war' between people. I will appreciate mature respectful inputs. Please let's not make this a war zone..thanks.
Monsieur, Madame: Je peu ecrire en francais mais je veut que le message soit bien compris donc svp accepte mon lettre et commentaires au sujet du permi-apprenti pour moto en anglais: How can you explain that once someone has their 6A apprentice license, that rider is ONLY allowed to ride with a group or another rider. Do you know and do you understand that is it MORE DANGEROUS , HAZARDOUS and simply RIDICULOUS for a novice-new rider on a motorcycle who has just gotten his license because he spent 12 days riding around in a parking lot, did a little obstacle test at the saaq and now, you tell him to FOLLOW an experienced rider around. How can you justify the safety behind this law. I have my full motorcycle license 6A so this letter does not apply to me..But I had my 6A apprenti last year and I was obliged to ride with EXPERIENCED riders. Without wanting to, I went way over my head on that ride and had not follow them wherever they went even though I didn't want To go. I can not turn back and go home..the law says I'm not allowed. So here I was on the big highways with way more experienced riders and the accopaganetur was gone ahead due to traffic and regular traffic flow..I lost him. Here is the scenario: You want to buy a motorcycle. The SAAQ tells you to do a written test after you do some schooling for motorcycle. You pass your written test and then you do your practical school practice in a PARKING LOT, around cones and through lines. After 18 hours of practical parking lot riding you do a 4 hour road ride with the instructor. So all in all you have about 20 hours because we have about 2 hours lost on theory even though it's parking lot time. Now you qualify and do your test at the REGIE and pass your obstacle test-circuit ferme. Bien 90%..Good job. You can go around lines, go around in a circle and stop your bike in a box. I think you will agree with me that most people do their test in the summer..so June, July August even September and October, but the 7 month probationary period continues to count throughout the winter. Then in early May, people are doing their final road test and upon successful results, are issued their full licenses. How is this safe. You must understand that the logic is not to overwhleming and the thought behind it is almost redundent. At least there should be some limit to the size of motorcycle a new rider or younger rider will be eligable to buy. It makes no sense to allow a 17 year old young person upon completing the very basic tests required for a motorcycle license, to embark ona purchase rendering him the owner of a Suzuki GSX-R 1000CC bike. Granted not all tennagers are equal in maturity and experience, but there should be a system that would control the choices at hand. Even more so, a OBLIGATORY intense motorcycle course as is offered by F.A.S.T. or any other recongnizable motorcycle school. Where the student is taught the proper techniques and skills to be able to apply on the PUBLIC road ways. You want to ride a motorcycle, well pay for your advanced course and pass it..and you can ride one. As in driving a car..driving is a PRIVELAGE not a RIGHT. So now, we have passed all are tests but we can only ride in a group. A group with an accopangateur who has a lot more experience than the apprenti. So off they go, apprenti following behind the acco. The acco. has more experience so we know that he doesn't ride with the same style and skill as the apprenti. But the apprenti has to keep up. The apprenti has to follow even where he doesn't want or feel comfortable to go. Traffic, highway, speeds, passing, unknown roads and BAD roads (another story). Now apprenti and accopganteur get separated. Now what? Well police may be lucky enough to see the apprenti do an enquete and see he's alone but should be with a acco. Police won't believe the situation and Loi 12 falls into place. Moto est saisie 30 jours. Or worse the apprenti tries to keep up with the accopangateur, he tries but has no skills in doing so. Goes beyond his limits and gets hurt or killed. This law is wrong and unsafe. Yes the saaq makes money from all these tests and failures and re-tests. But this law is creating the problem. 40 % of fatal accidents happen with riders who have their motorcycle for less than 3 months. Doesn't this make you realize how wrong it is to send a new rider out to follow more experienced riders. The law should be the reverse of what exists presently. UNTIL you have your full license after 7 months...(which also is ridiculous because the 7 months count even during the winter when you have not ridden your motorcycle at all...) no group riding. Putting a new rider on a road with an apprenti -license to ride with experienced riders is not safe...period. You are obliging the new rider to go BEYOND his capabilities and beyond his limits no matter what the circumstances are. It is preferable to OBLIGE new riders NOT TO RIDE IN A GROUP..but to ride ONLY alone for 1 year NOT INCLUDING THE WINTER MONTHS, so that they learn on their own and at their own pace. Perhaps limit the CC's on a new rider so that new riders do not have the option to buy a motorcycle with over 600CC. There's a girl on a moto forum that JUST got her license and now she purchased a 1000CC moto superbike.? How can that be permitted when she only has 25 hours of experience under her belt???? This is suicide law. The SAAQ has to change the laws governing motorcycle rules and laws an make them more appropriate to the concerning indivudual and category. You have to let your heads out of the bank vault and deal with the problem at hand. Too YOUNG and INEXPERIENCED riders on TOO FAST motorcycles. The motorcycles are not the problem. There should be an age limit on what CC power bike you can buy. For example under 25 years old: No more than 600CC and 600CC is a very fast motorcycle on the race supersport line. Whatever the case.. I hope this letter has made someone realize that the laws governing motorcycles are not ideal and not a benefit to anyone. In fact they are more dangerous than anything else... Sincerely, PL..
